Reflections #6

What:

Two weeks ago my class start visit Lobs and Lessons. We met children and introduced ourselves to them. I had three children in my group. They were very calm comparing with other children. We told them a Korean story, and we did a story with the pictures that we had about Korea.

So what:

Actually, some children were very active. They were comfortable by talking with us and asking us questions. We helped them to do homework, and had some conversations. Some children were very shy to talk with us. They just answered questions when we ask. In addition, I was sad because I could not play tennis and play games with children. I was watching them when they were playing, and it was so exciting. I like how children were acting when they lose the game.

The second visit was different from the first. We did not help children with homework. We started doing the handcraft. We did Hanbok . IT is a traditional women dress in Korea. Children were very happy when we were doing the Hanbok. They are smart because they did it quickly without any difficulties.

I faced some difficulties with treat some children when they say wrong words to each other. I do not know what I should do because it is first time that I treat American children. I know that we should follow rules with them.

One of my group did mistake with children when she said to them I was hit my older sister, but you fix what she said. Also, second visit one of my group was taking pictures for children, and you also fix it. SO I hope what my friends did, did not bother the stuff and the volunteers.

Now what:

I start learning a little bit about how treating children in America. It is not easy for me because it is completely different from my country, but I will do my best.

We talked about couple of things about Saudi Arabia such as food, holydays and marriage. One of the people that we met was working at Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia.

On the other hand, Dr. Krik’s class visited our class last week. Three of his class gave three short presentations.

So what

Last time was the best time for me in the library because there were many people who are interested to know about Saudis and Saudi culture. Some women and girls came and asked to teach them how to wear the hijab. One of the people in my group was living in Saudi Arabia, and he learned many Arabic words. He showed me a broken one Riyal that he keeps it. I gave him a new one to keep it.  In addition, the conversation partners were very active; they just keep asking my friend and me about many things such as life style in Saudi Arabia, living in America, and marriage that all people ask us about.

On the other hand, Dr. Krik’s class did good job. They gave three short presentations about Sport in Richmond, educational architecture and CSI in an easy way. They just were talking simply, giving joking, and my class interrupting them by asking questions. Also, three of my class gave three short presentations.

Now what

In my group was a boy, he is 12 years old. It was first time that I talked with young people. I was happy because he was asking me questions even he was shy. It was a practice for me before we go to the Lobs and Lessons.

Reflections #4

What

Three weeks ago, my class starts go to Richmond Public Library. Every time we meet new people, and we pick one presentation to present to them. We introduce ourselves, and talk about anything we want. I expected to meet students, but my expectation was wrong. In addition, last week my class goes to Hollywood cemetery with other academic class. It was a great experience for my because it is first time that I enter to cemetery. In my country, women not allow to enter cemeteries. I expected that it would be smaller than what it was.

So what

The first time I met two women, one of them just stayed around 15 minutes. My friend and I did not talk enough with her. The second woman was not interested ever. She did not talk and ask us. In addition, she has stereotypes about Saudi Arabia. She started talking with me by saying Saudi Arabia is a desert, and she laughed. In addition, she said couple thing about Islam rules and laughed. That affected me. I did my best to keep my embarrassing, and keep talking with her. Actually, I expected to meet people like seniors. Even they were elderly, they were very interested to know about other countries. Seniors asked me about Islam but in kind way. They respect other religions. I learned that I should be ready to face people who have stereotypes about Islam and Saudi Arabia and learn how I should respond by easy way.

On the other hand, I enjoyed Hollywood Cemetery tour with academic class because I learned a lot about that Cemetery. I noticed that there were many shape of stones, and that makes me ask why and what is the differences between them. In addition, I like what students did by giving short information about some people who were buried.

Now what

Now I used to go to the library, so I will be more confident than before. To develop the conversation next time, I will present more than one presentation.  In addition, I will be ready for any questions about Islam.
